Big national holidays and festivals are always a huge hit for the RV community to participate in. We’ve given our RVers tips and tricks on decorating the rig for Christmas, where to camp for Thanksgiving, and now we are going to tell you how to do Mardi Gras the right way.  Whether you are a rookie RVer or have been on the road for years, knowing how to celebrate Mardi Gras in your RV is always a good thing. It doesn’t matter if you’re traveling to to New Orleans or camping out at a small festival; these three tips will tell you what you need to do to make the most of your Mardi Gras experience.

What to Cook:

Celebrate the culture of New Orleans with these RV-friendly dishes! Be sure to have a glass of bourbon with every meal.

N’Awlins Muffaletta Sandwich

Ingredients:

1 10″ round Italian loaf
Salami
Capicola or Ham (don’t use honey or sweet ham)
Mortadella or Bologna
Provolone
Olive salad (see recipe below)
Extra virgin olive oil for the bread (best if it comes from the olive salad)

Instructions:

Slice the loaf of bread so you have a top and bottom. Tear out a bit of the soft bread from the bottom so you can “nest” the ingredients. Brush the insides of both bread halves with olive oil. Layer the meat then cheese and top with a generous amount of olive salad.

Cajun Muffaletta Sandwich with Meat Olives and Cheese

Ingredients:

2/3 c pitted green olives stuffed with pimento (a 10 oz jar, drained but not rinsed, works great) – coarsely chopped
2/3 c pitted black or kalamata olives – coarsely chopped
1/4 cup jarred giardiniera (mixed Italian pickled vegetables) – coarsely chopped
3 cloves minced garlic
1 anchovy fillet, mashed
1 T capers – rinsed
1/3 c fresh parsley – finely chopped
1 t fresh oregano – chopped
1/4 t black pepper
1/2 c extra virgin olive oil
1 T red wine vinegar

Instructions:

In a large bowl combine all ingredients. Cover and marinate in the fridge overnight or at least 12 hours.

Cajun Boiled Peanuts

Ingredients:

1/2 cup Cajun seasoning
2 pounds dried raw peanuts
1/2 cup salt
5 to 7 Tbsp. liquid Cajun crab boil
Instructions:

Place Cajun seasoning in a large stock pot; add peanuts and water to cover. Soak peanuts at least 8 hours or up to 24 hours. Drain and rinse. Place peanuts, salt, and crab boil in stock pot with 4 1/2 qt. water; bring to a boil over high heat. Cover, reduce heat to medium-low, and cook 6 hours or until peanuts are tender, adding water as needed to keep peanuts covered; stir occasionally. Remove from heat; let stand 1 hour.

What to Wear (you and the RV):

BEADS! Lots of beads. Mardi Gras is one huge masquerade parade. You and your RV should both be covered in purple, green, and gold which are the three colors that represent the whole carnival of Mardi Gras. Most importantly, (other than the beads) you should be covered in some kind of glitter. Crazy, feathery tutus and dresses are the perfect attire for a Mardi Gras festival or party. If you’re not feeling up to dressing up, wearing a few bead necklaces will still do the trick for celebration.

For your RV, find shiny purple, green and gold streamers to hang up everywhere. Even your RV can join in wearing beads. There are many stores where you can buy a pre-made Mardi Gras wreath to hang outside your door or you can even DIY. Mardi Gras flags and masks are always a must for decorations.
