The ten-day-long event started in 2007 after two pumpkinboats raced each other in order to educate the young and old about the specific agricultural science needed to grow Atlantic Giant Pumpkins. The festival draws attention to the mid-coast region because of its widely advertised events, like the Pumpkinboat Regatta. The race includes 400-700 pound hollowed-out pumpkins with motors attached and volunteer captains racing towards the finish line at the Damariscotta Harbor. There’s also the 180 foot Pumpkin Drop, which is pretty obvious, but what happens is they drop a massive pumpkin from 180 feet in the air and watch it crash onto a stack of junkyard cars. And, of course, the Giant Pumpkin Parade, which features the winner from the largest fruit in the state of Maine weigh-off. Who knew a whole event about pumpkins could be so packed with fun festivities?!

36th Annual Color Cruise and Island Festival- Grand Ledge, Michigan

Starting in 1980, this festival might take the prize for the best way to view the fall foliage so many of us wait for each year. The Color Cruise and Island Festival is three days long and is always the second full weekend in October. Check out the amazing fall colors by riverboat, canoe, horse & wagon, bicycle or plane.once you’ve seen all Mother Nature has to offer, enjoy the activities the event provides, like cider pressing, blacksmithing, fur traders, pioneer crafts and candle dipping. Then there’s food! Chili, freshly popped caramel corn, hot dogs and brats are all there to fill your belly up with warm, fall festival-worthy snacks.
