There is a common misconception that you have to have a truck in order to tow an RV \u2014 that couldn\u2019t be further from the truth<\/a><\/u>. Before we go any further, let\u2019s take a look at how you can calculate the towing capacity of your compact SUV.<\/p>\n

How Do You Know What Size RV Your Compact SUV Can Tow?<\/strong><\/h3>\n

It\u2019s important that you figure out what your SUV is capable of towing. Feel free to follow along with the steps below.<\/p>\n

Step 1:<\/strong><\/p>\n

Check your SUV\u2019s manual to find the towing capacity. On average, compact SUV\u2019s are typically ranked between 1k – 3k towing capacity. Of course, there are exceptions. So, you\u2019ll want to confirm before you make any decisions.<\/p>\n

Step 2: <\/strong><\/p>\n

Add the trailer\u2019s cargo carrying capacity (CCC) \u2014\u00a0this is the amount of weight your trailer can carry \u2014\u00a0to the dry weight of your trailer to confirm the gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR). This number should be compared to the number you previously found in step 1, as the GVWR cannot exceed your compact SUV\u2019s towing capacity.<\/p>\n

Step 3: <\/strong><\/p>\n

Make sure you account for your hitch-weight rating \u2014 each hitch has a maximum weight it can support. You\u2019ll want to check that number against the RV\u2019s \u201ctung rate.\u201d If the tung rate exceeds your hitch\u2019s weight rating, you may run into some issues down the road.<\/p>\n
