Classically and lovingly restored to late-mid-century splendor, this 1966 Airstream Safari is a vintage trailer with some modern twists fit for touring on or off the grid.

Located in Houston, this professionally polished classic 22-foot Airstream has been stylishly and authentically restored inside and out – with touches of modern conveniences added in.

The current owner of this head-turning vintage Airstream purchased it in 2014 from a well-known author residing in Minnesota. Tucked away in a barn, it was in fair, all-original condition. The Safari was completely renovated and updated under the guidance of the new owner – a luxury home builder – and his firm’s interior design team.

This amazing renovation maintains the original floor plan, including two sleeper sofas — one across the front of the trailer, the other along the side — that fold down to sleep four travelers. Each sofa has been stylishly upholstered with coordinating designer pillows and accents. Custom coordinated window coverings bring together the classic look.

The 1966 Airstream kitchen has been restored to its former glory. The original stainless and red stove and four-burner range was repaired to reign over the kitchen in campy splendor. The original cabinetry throughout the Safari was refaced with beautiful, environmentally friendly bamboo. A new Formica kitchen countertop with stainless steel edging and a new stainless-steel sink were installed, and the original refrigerator was repaired and now runs on LP or electric.

Inconspicuously tucked into the kitchen is a modern microwave, and a toe kick heater was added under the kitchen cabinets. The original flooring has been updated with durable, beautiful, and environmentally sustainable Marmoleum. This wonderfully designed, easy-to-tow trailer includes a large pantry and wardrobe, as well as large overhead cabinets.

Behind a rear folding door is a perfectly functioning retro bathroom with a completely modern twist.  The original deep tub and hand-held shower combination were saved and carefully restored during the 2015 renovations. A new Formica vanity top and updated faucets were added. Then, the original toilet was replaced with a new, self-contained, waterless Nature’s Head composting toilet.

The beauty of the renovation process was far more than skin deep on this classic trailer. During the renovation process the underfloors were sprayed with foam insulation for all-season travel. New water supply piping, and gas line supply piping were added, as well as a new Girard tankless water heater. A new, low-profile air-conditioner is another nod to year-around comfort camping.

Step outside this Airstream Safari with its mirror bright finish. Weather stripping on all the doors and windows has been replaced. A spare tire/receiver was also added to the steel bumper for convenience. The iconic Airstream styling imagined by Wally Byam in 1932 glistens on every square, riveted inch of the Safari, right down to the round tail lights, which were replaced by square lights the following model year. Two gleaming LP tanks were added and the outdoor shower is renovated and working.

Begin your luxury living in the outdoors under the new, retro-style yellow striped awning, but don’t expect complete relaxation. This glamorous renovation is sure to attract the attention of Airstream aficionados and lovers of all things vintage where ever it’s parked.
