RV virgins planning a road trip! Help please :)

Hi everyone,
We are 4 guys in our mid-twenties from the UK. We're planning a road trip for September 2010. Collection in Salt Lake City on 11 Sept 2010, drop-off in San Francisco on 23 Sept 2010.

The main question is which type of RV would be best for us? We want the largest and most impressive possible without spending an absurd amount of money. I like the look of the class A's, because it seems that you get so much of a better view of your surroundings, but perhaps the Class C's would be more feasible? If two of us have to share a double bed that'll be fine, but we range from about 5"9 - 6"2 in height, so I'm a bit concerned about some of these small single beds.

Having done some preliminary searches, everything's coming out SO expensive once you add on one-way fees, taxes, insurance, mileage, starter kits, etc etc etc. Can anyone give us some guidance as to the cheapest reputable companies to use?

Any other advice would be HUGELY appreciated! Thanks so much everyone! :)

Chevy transmission question

I have a '96 Rexhall with the 454 eng. The transmission went to 350 degrees on flat highway towing nothing in cruise control. This happened on 1 short trip and then the next trip I'll describe- I shifted down to D not OD, and it stayed there. Then when I hit the mountains, I pushed it hard and the temp went down to 160 degrees and stayed there until I parked. On the trip home, It never went over 160 degrees. Downhill, uphil, onthe freeway in D and OD - it never changed.

Do you suppose that a filter was plugged in the transmission and the hill torture test cleared it out?

onan emerald genset stops after I let go of start button

The genset has only 66hours on it so it's been sitting unused along time. It's in a 1977 motorhome. The electric pump doesn't seem to have any suction to pick up fresh gas. I think replacing the fuel pump will solve that. I can get it to run by spraying starter fluid in it but it dies as soon as i let of the starter button even if i keep spraying in the fluid. Does anyone have any ideas what the problem is? Thanks, Tom.

Getting ready to head south

Guess we will be heading south at the end of the month. We are taking a slightly different route to Texas this year. We are going to head to Memphis and then get on Route 1 thru Mississippi following the river. Does anyone know of any good campgrounds down that way? I can only find one with the Good Sam's Campground Directory.
Thanks!
Janeen

We are trying to get the furnace to come on in our toy hauler. We've followed the instruction manual to the letter, but nothing happens. When looking at the manual, the on/off switch isn't the same as on the unit. Any suggestions?
Thanks

New Tires

Does anyone know who has the best deal going on RV tires? I am going to replace my 4 rear ones on my coach. I have had no problems with the tire that came on it so I want to keep the same tire, they are just 8 years old and I do not want to wait for a blow out.
Goodyear G670 245/70R 19.5

Thanks, Barney

The Boat is in the Shed and one Camper is Winterized

It's that time of year. I just brought the boat home from the shop tonight and put it away in my shed. A couple of weekends ago, we winterized one of our campers but have continued camping in the other. I am not one to wish away my time, but I keep thinking spring is right around the corner! Perhaps we'll all be able to catch up with each other at Kenneth's Open House!

Alfa See Ya

We are looking at a '07 40 ft Alfa See ya. It has the best floorplan I have seen in a long time. BUT - all I get on the internet is negative feedback about the older 2000 models. Can anyone give me some advice are they really as bad as some people make them out to be ?. I have done a lot of research on the internet and looked at thousands of RV's . We both think the Alfa is what we want and what will meet our needs for fulltiming, but now we are weary . Thanks for all the good advice.

Tires

More on tires, my 2001 Dutch Star has the original tires still. They have always been covered and look like new . Have 56k miles on them. I run them hard (inflation) and am very particular about checking air pressure before embarking on any trip. I have never had a problem but I know I am probably reaching the life cycle end . Any recommendations on where to buy tires here in the southeast? These 275/80 22.5 tires are 9 years old and I hate to throw them away, also my coach runs several thousand lbs lighter then gross. $500.00 bucks apiece times 6 tires :( :( :(

Kohler Generator

REcently purchased a Georgie Boy Cruise Master with a Kohler Generator (works great)> My question is regarding the oil dipstick. According to the manual it is just placed on the top of the tube to check oil level -- or does it mean that it is "snapped" all the way down in it's locked position to get an oil level reading.

Wayne (Wisconsin)

Kool Seal: two coats

I am about to new-roof-ify my roof, hopefully permanently fixing any future problems on my '87 Class C..

I will use Eternabonds Webseal to seal all the roof-top seams. Then put on two coats of Kool Seal. Then finish with a single run of Eternabond from the back all the way to the front on the outside edge seal.

My question is about the two coats of Kool Seal.. Do I put on one right after the other? Let one dry for a few days, then apply the second coat? I asked one fellow, and he said put the second coat on right after the first (like it's one big coat), but apply the second coat across the first (if you go front-to-back with the first, go side-to-side with the second).. I'm just not sure if there is any chemical venting that may take place that I would cover and prevent with a second coat..

-Matthew

to flush or not to flush

i just bought a 26 ft fleetwood tt and need some advice. the holding tanks are empty now and are ready to use. when i get to the coast next week i will be hooking up to full hook-ups and was going to start vacation. should i run the water hose to the main lead on my tt and run the waste hose to the camp septic system and open the grey and black water valves and let it just run, or do i want to run the waste line, keep the valves closed and let the tanks fill up some then flush them when they get close to full? my buddy says he leaves the tank valves closed and when they start getting full, he opens the black water valve and drains it, then opens the grey water and lets the soapy shower and dish water go next to clean out the waste. do you then close the valves and fill the tanks up a little and rinse again or what. new to other than hotel or tent camping.
thanx
radar
